Hobart is located in the south of Tasmania (An island off the south of mainland Australia). Hobart is the largest city in Tasmania with a population of about 202,000 people. Hobart was founded in 1803 by British convicts and their guards. Hobart is connected to the rest of Australia by its airport which sees services fly elsewhere in the state and also interstate. Direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide are available. Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Blue all fly out of Hobart. This usually means that you should be able to get a bargain type special flight with relative ease. If you are visiting Hobart a good time is to see the finish of either Targa Tasmania a yearly motorsport event or the finish of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race is also a good event around the new year time with plenty or parties and events on.
Travelling around Tasmania is easiest by car as public transport services are quite poor with buses being the only option as passenger train services stopped several decades ago. One interesting option for the fit person is to bike around the state. IF you take this option it is advisable to do plenty of research before setting off in order to take the best route.
